A New Take on Tackling Dementia in Calderdale

FREE Taster Session

Classes in Dementia Prevention will be taking place at The Kindness Cafe in Todmorden from September until December 2025. The teacher, Sally Turner, is a Writer, Yoga Teacher, Therapist and Dementia Specialist.

Who is this session aimed at?

The Taster Session and classes are designed to inform those who could be vulnerable because they are caring for someone and who currently may have no time in their lives for themselves. Perhaps they have recently lost a loved one and now find themselves living alone? It could also be that they are feeling fearful or confused. This could be due to awareness of, or fear of memory loss or they may have a family member affected in a similar way…

Why is Sally running these classes?
As someone who has had both parents suffer Dementia, Sally has 20 years’ personal experience supporting and caring for those with severe memory loss. She believes passionately that we need to find answers to the quagmire of uncertainty and confusion surrounding dementia.

What is the takeaway information?
Students will learn ways of dealing with stress, lack of physical exercise, being alone for long periods, and lack of opportunity to do the things they enjoy. They will also have the opportunity to learn about the factors which contribute to memory loss as we get older. Sally will demonstrate different ways of mitigating our personal risk of Dementia and the group will read and discuss some of the recent research into the most common forms of dementia.

But what will participants LEARN?
Sally’s message is that you do not need to be a doctor to understand the science, all you need is a willingness to be proactive in your lifestyle in order to give yourself the best chance of avoiding Dementia. Participants will learn the 4 Pillars of Prevention, a clear pathway based on evidence available to all of us, which includes social and physical activities, the food we put in our bodies, gaining control over our stress levels and most importantly, paying attention to our sense of purpose and happiness.

What form will the class take?
The participants will be seated around a table and the course will be delivered as a mix of short presentations, discussions and activities. Depending on the participants, there will be some gentle physical or mental training using a variety of techniques.

Please note: the sessions are not suitable for anyone who has already been diagnosed with dementia or existing mental health issues.
